BOSTON, Massachusetts -- As reported by The Boston Globe: "As talk at the State House returns to casinos, a grass-roots group is mobilizing, hoping to ensure that legislators keep the region's needs in mind when they consider legalized gambling.
"The Regional Task Force on Casino Impacts, formed by members of 17 communities across southeastern Massachusetts to protect the interests of those towns, also is closely following a related drama in Middleborough.
"Officials in that town are considering a meeting with the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe to determine whether the recent admission of illegal activity by the tribe's former chairman has any effect on the casino agreement struck in 2007.
"Middleborough is the target site for a mega-casino being proposed by the Mashpee Wampanoag Tribe. An application to place a 500-acre property off Precinct Street into federal trust, which would exempt the casino from state and local regulation, is under review by the US Department of the Interior.
"Last week, the regional task force established several subcommittees to pursue some in-depth research on topics such as traffic and environmental impacts, so the group can produce statistics to support its arguments about how a casino would harm the region surrounding it..."
